Be sure to bring binoculars when we explore Spring Lake, part of the Upper Mississippi Refuge system. There is a wide flat trail atop the dams from which to observe the water, plants, birds, etc. There will be no fire, but drinks will be served.
From the I-80 Bridge, take IL Rte. 84 north to Thomson. From the 55 mph sign on the outskirts of Thomson, proceed approximately 7 miles north on IL Rte. 84 until you see a brown sign on the right hand side for the Upper Mississippi Refuge Spring Lake. Turn left after the brown sign, look for hike signs and proceed into parking lot. Approximate distance from I-80 is 40 miles.

Wildcat Den State Park encompasses 417 acres of exceptional beauty and imposing sandstone exposures. A series of well maintained hiking trails affords the hiker access to many points of interest, including rock formations dating back nearly 375 million years. Picturesque sandstone cliffs, rock outcroppings and glens provide spectacular views. Arrive early and take in the Pine Creek Grist Mill located in the eastern part of the park on Pine Creek. The mill, built in 1848, is one of the finest examples of mid nineteenth century mills. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby is the Melpine Schoolhouse which offers another glimpse into Iowa’s past.
From Davenport take Highway 22 (River Road) west. Drive through Buffalo and Montpelier. Three miles past Montpelier turn right where the park sign indicates. Follow hike signs. From Muscatine drive east 10 miles passing by the town of Fairport and then looking for park entrance signs. Turn left onto Wildcat Den Road and follow signs.

Come join us at Whitewater Canyon, a newly established park in the southern part of Dubuque County. This park is full of wide grassy trails along with 13 caves, some of which we can stop to explore if you bring a flashlight. You will be able to see rock work that was done in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corp. We will hike to a scenic overlook above the Maquoketa River. The area does have ticks and definitely wild turkey. This is one you will not want to miss. Restrooms are NOT available.
Go north out of Davenport on US 61 North approximately 50 miles to Zwingle (which is about 16 miles north of Maquoketa). Turn left onto 300th/Union Street which ends up turning into Washington Mills Road. After about 5.5 miles this road meets up with Moloney Road where you will turn right (northwest) and go about 1 mile. At the “T” intersection is Higginsport Road (also D55), turn left to head west. Continue west on Higginsport Road passing through the town of Bernard for about 4.6 miles. Turn left (southwest) onto Curoe Road, go just over 1 mile south to the park entrance. These roads up to the park are all paved roads. It’s a small parking lot, so park close together.

Along the Amana Nature Trail outside of Homestead, we will hike along a trio of Indian burial mounds near the trail, probably dating from the Early Woodland period, about 1000 years ago. At the end of the trail at the Iowa River, we may be able to see a fish weir which is a V-shaped array of rocks in the water placed there by American Indians as a fish trap. This fish weir is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is the only structure of this kind in Iowa. At high water the fish weir is entirely under water, but at low water, the rocks are clearly visible. Fish would be herded through the shallow water toward the vertex of the V, perhaps by people beating the water with branches. Once trapped in the shallow water of the vertex, it would be quite easy to net or spear the fish.
Travel west on I-80 past Iowa City to the Amana interchange to exit 225, turning towards Amana Colonies staying on U.S. 151. Hwy. 6 will join Hwy. 151 for about 2 miles. Watch for where these highways split: Hwy. 151 goes straight towards Amana and Hwy. 6 will turn right. At this intersection, turn left onto the road that leads to the nature trail. Restrooms are NOT available. About 1.5 hours from Davenport.
